The Tau Cross is a visible sign of the Franciscan Family that our founder St.Francis of Assisi adopted as his signature sign. Historically, it can be traced back to the Scriptures found in the Book of theprophet Ezekiel 9: "Pass through the city (Jerusalem) and mark an X on the foreheads of those who moan over all the abominations that are practiced within it. To the others I heard them say: pass through the city after him and strike but do not touch any marked with the X."
A second reference to the Tau Cross is found in the Book of Revelation 7:3"Do no harm to the land or the sea or the trees until we imprint this seal on the foreheads of the servants of God." Our patron saint, Benedict the Moor, was a Franciscan Friar and with the arrival of the Friars, we have adopted this biblical sign of the Tau as our signature sign for us at St. Benedict.
May the Tau Cross be a reminder to that we are called as a Church to be a sign of the redeemed of the Lord for the 21st Century. Wearing the Tau compels us to live lives of hope and renewal in the world by the way we love and forgive one another. May the Tau be our sign of renewal as we rededicate ourselves and our families to the Lord, finding comfort that the angels of God are instructed to protect us from all harm on this human home to God.
